Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Inspection in Brooklyn: What to Know First

HeatShield chimney inspection in Brooklyn typically runs $189 – $340 depending on the flue’s condition and access, and we complete most inspections same-day with a written report and camera footage you keep. If your Brooklyn brownstone or pre-war home has a HeatShield liner or repair coating, we inspect it as an independent service provider with no manufacturer ties, which means you get an honest read on what’s fine and what actually needs work. This page is for homeowners in Park Slope, Bed-Stuy, Ditmas Park, Bay Ridge, and every neighborhood in between who own a HeatShield product and want to know it’s doing its job. Call (607) 695-6218 and we’ll schedule a time that works, tell you the price before we arrive, and send a technician who knows this product line well enough to spot what others miss.

How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

HeatShield makes a handful of products, and they don’t all age the same way. During inspections across Brooklyn, we see the same patterns repeat in century-old flues and newer liners alike. Here’s what actually shows up.

  • Cerfractory Flue Sealant breakdown at the smoke chamber. HeatShield’s Cerfractory material is a cementitious sealant, not a flexible liner. In Brooklyn homes with unlined or partially lined chimneys, we regularly find it cracking at the smoke chamber shoulders where the flue narrows. The shoulders flex with temperature swings, and a rigid sealant can’t follow. Our fix is to map the cracks by camera, determine whether the underlying masonry is sound, and re-apply only where the original material has separated, never over sound sections.
  • Joint failure between HeatShield sections and the original terra cotta. This is the one we see most in pre-war Brooklyn chimneys. HeatShield was often applied over existing clay tile, and where the old tile meets the new coating, the bond line is only as strong as the surface it grips. Years of creosote, moisture from our humid summers, and freeze-thaw cycles in February create hairline separations a visual inspection from the roof won’t catch. Our camera catches it. We document it with stills, mark the exact depth with a laser, and tell you plainly if it can wait or needs addressing before next burn season.
  • HeatShield liner thinning at the first flue offset. Brooklyn chimneys rarely go straight up. The offsets and bends are where HeatShield’s spray-applied product gets applied thinnest, and that’s also where creosote accumulates fastest. In homes from Windsor Terrace to Greenpoint, we see this same thinning pattern. The inspection step here is not just looking, it’s measuring residual thickness at the offset and comparing it to the manufacturer’s original application spec. When it’s too thin, we quote a targeted re-coat, not a full liner replacement, when the surrounding flue is still solid.
  • Water intrusion at the crown that undermines the HeatShield from above. A HeatShield chimney is only as dry as the crown above it. Brooklyn’s wet autumns and freezing winters push water into cracked crowns, and that water migrates down between the HeatShield and the masonry behind it. What looks like a liner problem is often a crown problem that has been left alone too long. On inspection, we check the crown first, then the flue. If we find crown damage, the fix is replacing or sealing the crown before the HeatShield is evaluated for moisture-related delamination.
  • Improper earlier application by a previous contractor. We can’t count how many HeatShield jobs we’ve inspected in Brooklyn where a prior technician skipped surface preparation. HeatShield needs a clean, profiled surface to bond. If the old flue wasn’t swept and scoured first, the product can delaminate in sheets. When we see this, we document it carefully, because it’s rarely the homeowner’s fault and it often means the product failed through no defect of its own. From there we walk you through options: targeted removal of loose material and re-application, or a DuraFlex liner if the underlying flue can’t hold a coating.

Our HeatShield Chimney Inspection Process

Every HeatShield inspection we do in Brooklyn follows the same unhurried, documented process. No surprises, no on-the-spot pressure, no work recommended without camera evidence you can see for yourself.

  1. 1
Call and book. A live person answers, takes your address and the age of your home, and tells you the inspection price before you hang up. (607) 695-6218.
  2. 2
We arrive and protect the room. Shoe covers go on at the door, drop cloths go down around the hearth, and we ask before moving anything. The C.A.R.E. values start before the ladder does.
  3. 3
Level 2 camera inspection as standard. We run the camera through the entire flue, from firebox to crown. You see the footage, and you keep a copy. If a Level 1 visual is all a real estate transaction requires, we’ll tell you that and charge accordingly.
  4. 4
HeatShield-specific measurements. At the offsets and joints, we measure residual thickness, check for delamination, and note any separation from the original tile. We photograph everything.
  5. 5
Written findings and a straight recommendation. We sit down with you and go through the images. If the HeatShield is intact, we tell you to keep using it. If it’s marginal, we say so and give you a written price to address it. If it’s beyond saving, we explain why a DuraFlex or Gelco product might serve you better now, and we quote that too.
  6. 6
Cleanup photo and leave. Before we walk out, we photograph the hearth and floor so you can see exactly how we left the room. The 365-Day Done Right Promise backs the inspection and any work that follows.

What HeatShield Chimney Inspection Costs in Brooklyn

Most HeatShield inspections in Brooklyn fall between $189 and $340. A simple Level 1 visual inspection for a real estate closing sits at the low end. A full camera inspection with thickness measurements at every offset, written photo documentation, and a repair recommendation runs higher because it takes time to do correctly.

What moves the price: flue height and access, whether we’re on a roof in Park Slope or working from a ladder at a Cobble Hill brownstone, and whether the flue has significant creosote build-up that requires cleaning before the camera can see clearly. We’ll tell you the price before we arrive, and it won’t change at the door. Call (607) 695-6218 for a written estimate, free.

Why Brooklyn Homeowners Call Kindling Chimney Brooklyn for HeatShield Work

Danny Cortes grew up in East Los Angeles, where old buildings ask a lot of the people who keep them running. He studied building and construction technology at East Los Angeles College, then spent years refining his chimney work before bringing that patient, methodical approach to Brooklyn, a borough whose century-old brownstones and pre-war flues keep his crew genuinely busy. That’s not a corporate credential. It’s a way of working.

What that means for your HeatShield inspection is simple. We show up when we say we will. We put shoe covers and drop cloths down without being asked. We use pet-safe products where there’s a choice, and we keep the tools quiet when the kids are asleep. The written price comes before any work starts, every time, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise stands behind everything we do. If the inspection finds something, we fix it right. If it doesn’t, we tell you that plainly, charge you the inspection fee, and leave your fireplace cleaner than we found it.

We’re independent, so we’re not obligated to sell HeatShield products. When a HeatShield coating has genuinely failed, we’ll tell you. When a DuraFlex or Gelco liner would serve your Brooklyn home better over the next 20 years, we’ll tell you that too, with an honest price for each option.
