Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide
We install HeatShield-compatible chimney caps throughout Brooklyn, and a full replacement with the cap itself typically runs between $475 and $850 installed, depending on flue size and roof access. We stock common HeatShield-compatible caps on our trucks, so in most Brooklyn neighborhoods we can complete the swap in a single visit. Most owners discover the cap has failed the same way: a rust stain bleeding down the brick, a chunk of metal found in the yard after a storm, or water showing up in the firebox after a hard rain.
Which HeatShield Models This Applies To
HeatShield manufactures caps sized to their flue systems, not generic one-size-fits-all units, and that sizing is where we see most compatibility mistakes. The cap must match the flue tile inside diameter, not the brick chimney outside width, and a cap that’s off by a half inch will either wedge in wrong or sit loose and rattle in the wind. If you still have the original paperwork, look for a model number stamped on the underside of the cap hood or the mounting skirt. No paperwork? We measure the flue opening on site before quoting, because guessing is how caps end up two blocks down someone else’s roof after a nor’easter.
Kindling Chimney Brooklyn is an independent service provider, not a HeatShield affiliate, but we work with their sizing charts directly. On a Brooklyn brownstone with a 13×13 flue, for example, the correct HeatShield-compatible cap is a different unit than the one a 8×8 condo flue takes, and the difference matters for draft and water exclusion.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The cap’s spark arrestor screen or hood has separated from the mounting band, letting rain fall straight down the flue. This is the most common failure we see in Park Slope and Prospect Heights, where caps take direct wind off the harbor.
- Rust stains streaking down the brick. The cap’s base flashing or the mounting bolts have begun to corrode. In Brooklyn’s freeze-thaw cycles, a pinhole rust spot opens into a channel within two winters.
- A rattling sound in high wind. The cap has loosened from its mounting. Left alone, the wind works it back and forth until the bolts shear or the skirt deforms.
- Draft problems that came on suddenly. A cap that’s partially collapsed or clogged with leaf matting can choke airflow, and you’ll notice smoke backing into the room on startup.
- Debris inside the firebox. If you find pieces of metal mesh or cap fragments in the firebox, the arrestor screen has failed. Those openings also invite birds and squirrels into the flue.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Brooklyn, expect to pay $475 to $850 for a HeatShield-compatible cap, installed. The range comes down to flue dimensions, roof pitch, and whether your existing mounting band is salvageable or rust-welded in place. A standard 13×13 flue cap on a two-story flat roof with a ladder-accessible parapet lands at the low end; a steep pitched roof in Bay Ridge or Dyker Heights with a 9×13 flue and a corroded base plate lands at the high end.
That price includes the cap, the mounting hardware, removal of the old unit, and our written price confirmed before we put a ladder on the roof. No on-the-spot upsells. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, so if the cap shifts or leaks within a year, we’re back to make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
The honest split: if you want to check your cap from the ground with binoculars, that’s safe and useful. Look for tilt, rust, or gaps at the skirt. What we don’t recommend is a homeowner on a Brooklyn roof without a harness, a spotter, and a working knowledge of cap-to-flue sizing. Rooftop work on a three-story brownstone with a slate or membrane surface is a long way down, and a cap that’s installed but not seated correctly still leaks and still rattles. Danny Cortes will tell you the same thing he tells every homeowner who calls: it’s a one-visit replacement for us, and you shouldn’t be on that roof working out how to anchor yourself. Call (607) 695-6218 for an exact quote, and we’ll send someone who does this every week.
FAQs
A stainless steel HeatShield-compatible cap in Brooklyn’s salt-adjacent air and freeze-thaw winters typically lasts 8 to 15 years, while galvanized units run closer to 5 to 8 before the first rust breakthrough. If your cap has made it past a decade, it’s worth having us up for a look even without visible symptoms. Call (607) 695-6218 and we’ll schedule a roof-level inspection at no charge with your sweep.
Sometimes, when the failure is limited to a corroded bolt or a loose mounting screw, we can tighten and reseat the existing cap for a fraction of replacement cost. If the hood, screen, or skirt has rusted through, repair just buys a few months, and replacement is the honest fix. We’ll show you photos of the damage before recommending anything.
A standard HeatShield-compatible cap swap on an accessible Brooklyn roof runs 45 to 90 minutes, including removing the old unit, seating the new one, and photographing the result. If scaffolding or a roof anchor system is required for a steep pitch, we’ll tell you that on the phone before anyone climbs.
We stock common sizes for 8×8, 9×13, and 13×13 flues across HeatShield-compatible lines, plus DuraFlex and Gelco alternatives. Uncommon flue dimensions take a few days to source. Either way, we confirm the cap size before we schedule so you’re not paying for a second visit.
