Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide
DuraFlex damper repair in Brooklyn typically runs $275 – $625 installed, depending on which component failed and whether the damper frame itself is salvageable. We stock DuraFlex-compatible damper plates, linkage kits, and cable assemblies on our trucks, so most repairs happen in a single visit. The usual giveaway is a damper that won’t seat fully, a handle that spins without resistance, or cold air dropping down the flue when the fireplace isn’t in use.
Brooklyn homes put these dampers through a specific kind of abuse. The borough’s freeze-thaw cycles and salt-laden air work on the cast iron and steel parts year-round, even when the fireplace sits idle. Add in the fact that most Brooklyn chimneys are lined with clay tile that holds moisture, and you get dampers that corrode faster here than they would in drier climates. Owners usually discover the problem in late fall, right around the first cold snap, when the draft from the flue suddenly becomes impossible to ignore.
We’re an independent Brooklyn chimney service company, not a DuraFlex affiliate. That matters because we repair these dampers based on what the part actually needs, not what a manufacturer’s warranty says we’re allowed to do. Danny Cortes has replaced enough of these to know exactly which failures are repairable and which ones call for a full damper assembly replacement.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex damper systems fall into three broad categories, and the repair path differs for each. The most common in Brooklyn are the cast-iron throat dampers, which sit just above the firebox and operate with a handle or worm-gear linkage. These are the dampers most often found in pre-war brownstones and older single-family homes across Park Slope, Bed-Stuy, and Bay Ridge.
The second category is DuraFlex top-sealing dampers, which mount at the top of the flue and seal with a silicone gasket. These fail differently: the cable stretches or snaps, or the gasket loses its memory and lets air slip past. The third is the DuraFlex chimney-top damper, which is essentially a cap with a spring-loaded door. We see these most often on shorter flues in converted row houses.
The compatibility gotcha we run into constantly: a damper plate stamped “DuraFlex 8×13” does not necessarily fit every 8×13 flue. The actual opening width and depth vary by as much as a quarter-inch depending on how the firebox was built. We measure the flue throat on site and match the plate to the actual opening, not just the nominal size. OEM DuraFlex parts are the default choice when they’re still in production. For discontinued sizes, we use machined aftermarket plates that match the original bolt pattern, and we won’t install one without showing you the fit before it’s bolted in.

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Is Failing
- The handle turns but the damper doesn’t move. This is almost always a stripped worm gear or a disconnected linkage arm. The gear housing threads wear down over time, especially if the damper has been forced open or shut against a creosote buildup at the throat.
- Cold air pours into the room when the fireplace isn’t lit. The damper isn’t sealing. With cast-iron throat dampers, the plate warps from heat cycling and leaves a gap around the edges. With top-sealing dampers, the silicone gasket has hardened and won’t compress against the flue tile anymore.
- You can hear wind whistling through the flue on gusty days. That whistle is air moving through a gap no wider than a dime. It’s a sign the damper edge has corroded or the plate has shifted on its hinge pins.
- Rainwater drips down into the firebox after a storm. A damper that won’t close fully lets water follow the flue walls straight down. In Brooklyn’s Nor’easter season, this is the fastest way to find out your damper has failed: rust streaks in the firebox and a damp, sour smell.
- The damper frame has visible rust scale or flaking metal. This is the late-stage sign. Once the frame itself deteriorates, the damper plate loses its seating surface and no adjustment will make it seal. The repair becomes a frame replacement, not a plate swap.
None of these symptoms get better on their own. A damper that’s partially open costs you heated air all winter and lets moisture into the flue year-round. The good news is that most of these failures are repairable in under two hours once we have the right part in hand.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a standard DuraFlex cast-iron throat damper repair in Brooklyn, expect to pay $275 – $425 installed. That covers the damper plate or linkage kit, labor, and the written price you get before we start. A full top-sealing damper replacement runs $450 – $625, which includes removing the old assembly, installing the new damper and cable system, and testing the seal from the roof.
| Repair Type | Typical Brooklyn Installed Price | What Drives the Range |
|---|---|---|
| Cast-iron damper plate replacement | $275 – $400 | Plate size, access difficulty, whether the frame needs cleaning before seating |
| Linkage or worm-gear repair | $275 – $350 | Whether the gear housing is reusable or needs full replacement |
| Top-sealing damper assembly replacement | $450 – $625 | Flue height and roof access, cable routing through the firebox, gasket condition |
| Damper frame replacement | $550 – $675 | Frame removal is labor-intensive; requires setting the new frame into the existing throat |
The price we quote is the price you pay. We don’t add a trip charge, we don’t upsell, and we don’t “discover” problems once we’re on the roof. If the damper can be repaired with a simple part swap, we tell you that before we touch a tool. If it needs a full replacement, we show you why with a camera and explain the difference so you can make the call yourself. Every repair is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the work isn’t right, we make it right, no fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a short list of things a Brooklyn homeowner can safely check before calling us. Look up into the firebox with a flashlight and check for visible rust or plate misalignment. Try the handle gently to see if the plate moves. That’s about it. The moment you’re reaching for a wrench to unbolt a damper plate, you’re working inside a chimney throat with limited visibility, and plates that seem light are often heavier than they look once a pin comes out. A dropped plate can crack firebrick or hurt you.
The more dangerous part is what you can’t see: if the damper has been failing for a season or two, there may be creosote buildup at the throat, which makes the area slippery and the air foul. We use drop cloths, we wear respirators where needed, and we don’t ask you to breathe anything we wouldn’t breathe ourselves. Call (607) 695-6218 and we’ll take a look, give you a written price, and get it done before the next cold front settles over the borough.
FAQs
A cast-iron DuraFlex throat damper in Brooklyn typically lasts 15 – 25 years before the plate warps or the linkage fails. Top-sealing dampers tend to last 10 – 15 years because the silicone gasket degrades with UV exposure and freeze-thaw cycling. Homes closer to the Gowanus or the harbor see faster corrosion than inland neighborhoods, where the air is a little less salty. Call (607) 695-6218 for an exact assessment of your damper’s condition.
Yes, in most cases the damper can be repaired instead of replaced. Linkage arms, worm gears, and damper plates are all available as individual DuraFlex-compatible parts. The point of no return is when the frame itself has rusted through, which is less common but does happen in older flues. We’ll show you photos of your damper from inside the flue so you can decide with evidence in front of you. Call (607) 695-6218 for a free estimate.
A standard damper plate or linkage replacement takes 60 – 90 minutes once we’re set up. A top-sealing damper assembly replacement takes about 90 minutes to two hours, because it involves roof access and cable routing. We’ll give you a time window before we arrive and respect it. Call (607) 695-6218 to schedule.
We stock the most common DuraFlex damper plates, linkage kits, cable assemblies, and gaskets on our Brooklyn service trucks. For uncommon sizes or discontinued models, we source OEM or equivalent aftermarket parts within 3 – 5 business days and confirm the lead time before you approve anything. We also work with parts from HeatShield and Gelco, so if your chimney has mixed-brand components, we can still handle the repair. Call (607) 695-6218 and we’ll check your part against our inventory while you’re on the phone.
A clean flue is a quiet one – you shouldn’t notice your chimney until we haven’t done our job.
If your DuraFlex damper isn’t sealing and the draft is getting worse, don’t wait for a cold snap to prove the point. Call (607) 695-6218 or reach out online. We’ll schedule a time, bring the right parts, and leave your floors covered, your air clean, and your damper opening and closing the way it should.
