Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Copperfield Crown Repair: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible chimney crowns in Brooklyn, with most crown repair jobs running between $850 and $1,600 installed depending on crown size, flue count, and how much of the old crown needs to come off before we pour or cap. Most Copperfield crown repairs in Brooklyn are done in a single visit, and we carry the common Copperfield crown dimensions on the truck so there’s no second trip for parts. You usually discover a crown problem the way our customers across Park Slope, Bay Ridge, and Williamsburg do: water staining on the ceiling near the flue, efflorescence on the brick below the crown line, or a chimney inspector pointing it out during a pre-purchase walkthrough.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield crowns are cast to fit their standard flue tile sizes, so the compatibility question is less about a specific model number and more about the flue outside diameter the crown must bridge. Copperfield crowns ship in sizes matched to common flue tile IDs: 8×8, 8×12, 12×12, and 13×13 inches, with a typical outside lip overhang of 1.5 to 2 inches beyond the chimney masonry. We identify the right crown by measuring the outside dimensions of your clay flue tile with a tape measure and matching that to the Copperfield crown spec, not by reading a stamped part number off the old crown, because Brooklyn weather usually weathers those stamps away long before the crown fails.

OEM Copperfield crowns are cast concrete with a steel reinforcing ring cast into the skirt. We install OEM when the flue is a standard size and the chimney chase is in good shape. For older Brooklyn chimneys with unusual flue dimensions or an off-square chase, we pour a custom crown using professional-grade concrete instead, which gives the same water-shedding geometry without forcing an ill-fitting OEM piece. Kindling Chimney Brooklyn is an independent service provider; we are not affiliated with Copperfield, and we stock both OEM Copperfield crowns and the materials for custom pours so you are never waiting on the wrong part.

One compatibility gotcha we see often in Brooklyn brownstones: Copperfield crowns assume a level masonry crown base. A lot of pre-war Brooklyn chimneys have settled or spalled brick beneath the old crown, so the new crown must sit on a parged or rebuilt base. We check that before ordering or pouring anything. Without that step, even a perfect Copperfield crown will crack within two winters.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox after heavy rain. The crown is supposed to shed water away from the flue opening. When a crown cracks around the flue collar, water runs straight down the flue instead of onto the roof. We see this most often after Brooklyn’s heavy Nor’easter rains.
  • White mineral staining on the bricks below the crown. This is efflorescence: water soaked into the masonry and is now evaporating back out, carrying salts with it. It means the crown has been letting water into the chimney crown mortar and brick for months, not days.
  • Spalling or chipped concrete around the crown edges. Freeze-thaw cycles are relentless in Brooklyn. A crown that holds water through a January freeze will pop small chunks of concrete outward by March. If you see chunks on the roof or in the gutter near the chimney, the crown is degrading.
  • Rusted damper or fireplace accessories. Moisture that gets past a failed crown rusts steel parts quickly. If your damper is suddenly stiff or shows orange rust streaks, the crown is the likeliest water source.
  • Musty smell from the fireplace when the AC runs or after rain. Damp masonry inside an unlined or poorly capped chimney produces that wet-basement smell. It’s a sign water has been entering long enough to saturate the brick, and it will not dry out until the crown is fixed.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-flue Copperfield crown replacement in Brooklyn, we quote $850 – $1,150 installed. Multi-flue chimneys run higher, usually $1,200 – $1,600, because the crown is larger and the flue spacing must be measured precisely before installation. If the masonry base beneath the old crown is badly spalled or needs rebuilding, add $250 – $500 for parging and brick repair. You will see that number on the written estimate before any work starts, and it will not change unless the chimney is hiding something our initial inspection could not see.

Every Copperfield crown repair includes removal of the old crown, inspection and parging of the masonry base as needed, installation of the OEM Copperfield crown or a custom pour, and a water test to confirm proper drainage away from the flue. We seal the crown-to-flue joint with a weatherproof polyurethane sealant, and the work is covered under our 365-Day Done Right Promise. That means if water is still getting in a year later, we are back at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can inspect your own crown with a ladder and a good look: check for visible cracks, missing chunks, or a rust line around the flue. If the crown surface is cracked but intact, a silicone crown sealer can buy you a season, and we are happy to tell you honestly when that is the right call. What you should not do is attempt a crown replacement yourself. It means working at roof height while prying off concrete that is heavy and sharp, and a dropped chunk of crown can go through a skylight or injure someone below. The Crown repair is not a dangerous job in the high-tension spring sense, but it is roof work, and roof work deserves a professional who is insured and trained for it.

If you see any of the signs above, call (607) 695-6218. We will take a look, show you on camera why the crown failed, and tell you what the fix costs before we touch a tool.

FAQs

How long does a Copperfield chimney crown last in Brooklyn? A properly installed Copperfield crown lasts 20 to 30 years in Brooklyn’s climate, assuming the masonry base below it is stable and the crown-to-flue joint is sealed at installation. Without that seal, freeze-thaw cycles can crack the crown’s flue collar within five years. Call (607) 695-6218 and we will tell you honestly where your crown is in its lifespan.

Can a crack in the crown be repaired without replacing the entire crown? Hairline cracks under 1/8 inch can often be sealed with a high-solids crown sealer, provided the concrete is otherwise sound. Cracks wider than that, or cracks radiating from the flue, usually mean the crown has lost its structural integrity and patching will not hold another Brooklyn winter. We will always show you on camera which category your crown falls into before you spend a dollar.

How long does a crown replacement take? A standard Copperfield crown replacement takes roughly half a day on site, including removal of the old crown, preparation of the masonry base, installation, and water testing. Weather is the wildcard in Brooklyn; we do not pour or seal in rain or when temperatures are below 40 degrees, so we schedule around the forecast and confirm with you the morning of the job.

Do you stock Copperfield crowns or do you have to order them? We stock the common Copperfield crown sizes, 8×8, 8×12, and 12×12, on our trucks, so for most homes we can do the whole job in one visit. For unusual flue configurations or very old chimneys with non-standard dimensions, we custom-pour a crown on site, which takes the same day. Either way, you are not waiting on a shipment.

Danny Cortes grew up in East Los Angeles and brought his patient, methodical approach to Brooklyn’s century-old brownstones and pre-war flues. He has run crown inspections and replacements from Park Slope townhouses to buildings a block from Prospect Park, and he is the one who makes sure the written estimate lands in your hands before the work begins. A clean flue is a quiet one, you shouldn’t notice your chimney until we haven’t done our job.

If your Copperfield crown has failed or you just want a straight answer about its condition, call (607) 695-6218 and ask for Danny. A live person answers 24 hours a day, every day. We will schedule a visit, inspect the crown together, and give you a written price before any work starts.
