Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Gelco chimney caps throughout Brooklyn, with most Gelco cap installations running between $285 and $520 including the cap, mounting hardware, and labor. Most cap replacements we do in Brooklyn are booked within a few days, not weeks. Here’s the situation we see regularly: a homeowner hears rain hitting the fireplace damper, or notices water staining on the ceiling near the flue, or finds pieces of a rusted cap in the yard after a storm. The Gelco cap that came with the house, often installed years ago, has quietly stopped doing its job. This page walks you through what that means and what a replacement actually involves.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes a few distinct cap lines, and they do not all fit the same flues. The Gelco top-mounted caps, including the standard single-flue models and the multi-flue versions used on older Brooklyn brownstones with two or three flues sharing one crown, account for most of what we replace. Gelco’s stainless steel caps with the expanded mesh screening are the ones we see age out in Brooklyn weather. Before recommending a specific Gelco model, we always measure the outside flue tile dimensions, because a Gelco cap sized for a nominal 8×8 flue will not seat correctly on a 7.5×11 or 13×13 tile, which we see often in pre-war Brooklyn chimneys. When a Gelco original is no longer made in the needed size, we carry quality aftermarket equivalents with the same mounting footprint. One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Gelco caps that mount with pressure screws against the flue tile work fine on square and rectangular tiles, but on round clay liners, which appear in some Brooklyn chimneys built before 1920, an inside-mount cap or a custom crown-mounted solution is usually the better choice.
Kindling Chimney Brooklyn is an independent chimney service provider. We are not affiliated with Gelco, but we install Gelco caps and we stock Gelco replacement hardware because we see enough of them on Brooklyn rooftops to know which parts actually hold up.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
Most failing chimney caps announce themselves the same way, in the same order. Here is what Danny Cortes and the crew look for when a Brooklyn homeowner reports a cap problem:
- Rust blooming through the lid seams. Gelco’s galvanized steel lids eventually surrender to the salt, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles we get every winter in Brooklyn. Rust around the lid seam means water is getting under the lid and into the flue. This is the most common failure we see after 6 to 9 years of exposure.
- Warped or bowed lid after a storm. A lid that no longer sits flat deflects water at an angle, sending it under the cap and down the outside of the flue tile, where it softens mortar over time. We see this most often on rooftop chimneys in exposed neighborhoods like Red Hook and along the waterfront.
- Torn or displaced mesh screening. The screen keeps nesting birds and raccoons out of the flue. Once it tears, the cap still keeps rain out but the flue becomes an open invitation. In Brooklyn, we pull nesting material out of chimneys every spring, and a torn Gelco screen is often how the birds got in.
- Cap sitting crooked or rattling against the flue tile. Wind, ice, and the rooftop exposure that comes with Brooklyn townhouse chimneys will eventually loosen a pressure-screw mount. A rattling cap is a warn-before-it-fails situation: high wind will finish the job and send it into the neighbor’s yard or onto a car.
- Water staining on interior walls or ceiling near the fireplace. By the time water shows up indoors, the cap has been failing quietly for a while. The water usually travels down the outside of the flue liner and collects at the smoke chamber or the attic floor. We trace this back to a compromised cap more often than any other single cause except cracked crown mortar.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Gelco-compatible chimney cap installation in Brooklyn typically runs between $285 and $520 installed, and the price is written down for you before any work starts. What drives the range is access and flue configuration: a one-story rear extension with a single square flue lands at the lower end, while a three-story brownstone chimney with a multi-flue crown and a roof hatch that needs a second set of hands lands higher. Every cap quote we give includes the cap itself, stainless mounting hardware, removal and disposal of the old cap, and a photo of the finished installation. We use professional-grade Gelco caps or a direct aftermarket equivalent when the exact Gelco size is no longer produced. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, which means if the cap is still moving, still rattling, or letting water through within a year, we come back and make it right.
DIY or Call Us?
There is a safe way to inspect a chimney cap, and then there is the part we would rather you not do yourself. From the ground, you can look for a tilted cap, visible rust, or missing mesh. From inside, you can shine a flashlight up the flue with the damper open and look for daylight gaps around the cap. What we do not recommend is ladder or roof work on a Brooklyn chimney. Our flues run three, four, sometimes five stories up, and roof pitches on older brownstones are not forgiving. A cap that is loose enough to need replacing is also one good wind gust away from coming down. Wait for a crew that carries the right fall protection and knows how to move around a hundred-year-old clay tile crown without cracking it. That is us. Call (607) 695-6218 and we will get you on the schedule.
FAQs
In Brooklyn, a Gelco chimney cap usually lasts 7 to 12 years depending on rooftop exposure, proximity to the waterfront, and how often the flue is used. Galvanized lids fail earlier near the salt air in neighborhoods like Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay; stainless lids routinely outlast them by several years. If yours is past year 10, it owes you nothing, and a replacement is the smarter spend than patching rust. Call (607) 695-6218 for an exact quote.
In our experience, rarely. A tear in the mesh can sometimes be stitched with stainless wire for a season, but a rusted lid seam or a warped lid cannot be repaired in a way that will survive one Brooklyn winter. The repair economics do not work: the labor to access the cap is the same as replacement, so you would be spending most of the money to keep the oldest part on the chimney. We will tell you plainly if a repair will hold, and we will show you the photo to prove it.
Most Gelco cap replacements take 45 to 90 minutes on the roof once our crew has safe access, and we usually have the right size on the truck. Full appointment time including set-up, removal, installation, and the clean-up photo at the end is typically under two hours for a standard single-flue replacement. Multi-flue or difficult-access jobs take longer, and we will tell you that on the phone before we book.
Yes. We stock the most common Gelco single-flue and multi-flue sizes on the truck for Brooklyn service calls, along with quality aftermarket caps with the same footprint for flue sizes Gelco no longer covers. We also regularly install materials from DuraFlex and HeatShield when the chimney needs more than a cap. If your flue tile is an unusual size, we will source the correct cap before the appointment so there is no second visit. Call (607) 695-6218 with your flue measurements and we will confirm we have it ready.
A clean flue is a quiet one – you shouldn’t notice your chimney until we haven’t done our job.
If your Gelco cap is done, do not wait for the next nor’easter to prove it. Call (607) 695-6218 for a free estimate. We will give you a written price, tell you exactly what is going on that roof, and leave your home the way we found it – except with a chimney that is actually closed off from the weather.
