Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Brooklyn Owner’s Guide

If your DuraFlex chimney crown is cracked, spalling, or letting water into the flue, we stock DuraFlex-compatible crown repair materials on our trucks and install them throughout Brooklyn every week. A full crown repair or replacement in Brooklyn typically runs between $450 and $1,200 installed, depending on the size of the crown, how much of the old material has to come out, and whether the flue needs sealing work at the same time. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a water stain on the ceiling near the fireplace, a drip sound inside the flue during heavy rain, or a small piece of what looks like concrete sitting in the yard after a winter thaw.

What you’re seeing is the chimney crown, the concrete or mortar cap that sits on top of the chimney stack and sheds water away from the flue. DuraFlex makes the flexible stainless steel liner systems that run inside your flue, and when the crown above them fails, water works its way down around the liner and into the home. Danny Cortes and our Brooklyn crew repair and rebuild crowns to match the DuraFlex system you already have, so the liner stays protected and the water stays outside where it belongs.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex liners are built in two main configurations: the standard 316L stainless steel flexible liner used for wood-burning fireplaces and stoves, and the heavier 316Ti alloy meant for high-efficiency gas appliances. The crown repair principles are identical for both, but the crown material has to be matched to the liner’s diameter and the chimney’s existing masonry. Most Brooklyn chimneys running DuraFlex systems are in older homes, brownstones especially, and the original crown was poured decades ago with whatever mortar was on hand. That means yours may be incredibly hard, or it may be crumbling like dry sand in your fingers.

When we repair a crown around a DuraFlex liner, we don’t just patch the surface. We remove the degraded material down to sound masonry, then rebuild with a crown-specific mix that can handle Brooklyn’s freeze-thaw cycles. If your liner is a DuraFlex Pro 316Ti, you’ll want to check the crown’s drip edge extension, the overhang that keeps water from running down the brick face. Many older Brooklyn crowns were poured flush with the chimney, which is exactly what causes the staining and efflorescence people call us about. On the OEM versus aftermarket question: DuraFlex doesn’t sell a proprietary crown mix, so the materials we use are industry-standard crown repair compounds rated for exterior masonry exposure. What matters is not a brand label on the bag, but the profile we build: a proper slope, a drip edge, and a flexible sealant joint where the crown meets the flue tile.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. Water enters through crown cracks, runs down between the masonry and the DuraFlex liner, and finds the path of least resistance, which often means the ceiling joists below the chimney. The stain usually appears hours after rain ends, not during the storm itself.
  • White crust or flaking on the brick below the crown. This is efflorescence, dissolved minerals left behind when water evaporates from the masonry. It tells you water is moving through the chimney in quantities the bricks were never meant to handle.
  • Pieces of crown material in the gutter or on the ground after winter. Brooklyn’s freeze-thaw cycles are hard on any masonry that sits exposed to the sky. If you’re finding small chips or chunks near the chimney base, the crown has already started to come apart.
  • A musty or damp smell inside the firebox during humid weather. A failed crown lets moisture sit in the void between the liner and the original flue tiles. That moisture never fully dries, and the smell follows.
  • Visible cracks wider than a hairline when you look down from a nearby roof or an upper window. Hairline cracks can be sealed. Cracks you can slip a dime into usually mean the crown has moved and needs a rebuild rather than a patch.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-flue chimney in Brooklyn, a complete crown rebuild with DuraFlex-compatible materials runs from $450 to $800. Multi-flue chimneys, common on brownstones, run higher, typically $700 to $1,200, because there is more surface area and the joint between flues needs a proper expansion seal. What drives the price: how much old material has to come off, whether the flue tiles need repair at the crown line, and how accessible the roof is. Every quote includes the written price before work starts, the rebuild, the sealant, and a photo of the finished crown. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things from the ground or a window: whether you see cracking, whether water stains are appearing inside, whether the crown looks flat instead of sloped. What you should not do is get on a Brooklyn roof with a bucket of patching compound. Crown work means working at height above the flue, and the materials involved, crown mortars and sealants, are not forgiving when applied to a wet surface or on a windy afternoon. We repair poorly done patches every season, and the problem is always the same: the surface looked fine, but water was still getting through the bond line. If you suspect a crown issue, call us at (607) 695-6218 and we’ll inspect it properly, from the roof, with photos you can see.
