Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in New York, NY | Kindling Chimney Brooklyn
Kindling Chimney Brooklyn provides independent Heatshield sales & service for chimney cleaning and repair across New York, and if you own a home or manage a co-op here, you already know the complication: most New York chimneys are old, shared, internal, and governed by rules that don’t apply across the river in Jersey City or up in Westchester. The job is rarely just a sweep. HeatShield systems in New York live inside brownstones, pre-war apartment buildings, and high-rises, and that housing stock changes how the coating fails, how it must be prepped, and what the DOB expects before any work gets signed off. Call (607) 695-6218 for a straight answer on your chimney, or keep reading to understand what a HeatShield clean and recoat actually involves here.
Why New York Residents Choose Us for HeatShield Service
Danny Cortes runs our crew, and he learned building systems on old housing stock long before he ever touched a New York flue. East Los Angeles taught him that buildings from the 1920s and 1930s act differently than new construction, and that same lesson applies every week in New York. A HeatShield Cerfractory coating applied to a Brooklyn brownstone flue in 2014 is not going to look like one installed in a suburban single-family chimney last year. We open these liners, inspect them, and see what freeze-thaw cycles, salt air off the East River, and decades of interior moisture have actually done.
We are an independent HeatShield service provider, not a manufacturer arm. That matters because we can tell you when a recoat makes sense and when it doesn’t. We stock genuine HeatShield Cerfractory, Joint Repair, and CeCure products for New York jobs, and our techs know how the material behaves on clay tile in a pre-war co-op versus a gas fireplace flue on the Upper West Side. Live callers reach a person around the clock, and our written pricing lands before any work begins.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in New York
- Freeze-thaw spalling on brownstone crowns. New York winters cycle between snow, melt, and refreeze dozens of times a season. That water works into crown cracks, freezes, and pries apart the surface, then migrates behind HeatShield Cerfractory coatings and strips them from the flue tiles. We remove the loose material, repair the crown, and recoat once the masonry is dry.
- Delamination of CeCure sleeve sections near the East River. High humidity and salt air corrode the stainless steel mesh inside HeatShield CeCure sleeves, especially at flue offsets where the sleeve bends. The coating separates from the mesh and begins to sag or block the flue. We see this most often in Manhattan buildings within a few blocks of the river, and the fix starts with a camera inspection to map the failed sections.
- Debonding of Joint Repair at sealed-then-reopened flues. A lot of Manhattan brownstones and Upper West Side co-ops sealed their fireplaces decades ago. When a new owner reopens one, the old HeatShield Joint Repair material has dried, cracked, or separated from the clay tile joints. Without proper surface prep, a new coating won’t hold. We prep, repair, and recoat in that order.
- Pinhole leaks in coated gas fireplace flues. Gas fireplaces on high floors produce acidic condensate, and that eats through thin HeatShield coating patches faster than solid Cerfractory work. A pinhole leak lets exhaust into the wall cavity, not the room, and it shows up as staining or a faint odor. We camera the flue, find the leak, and recoat the section properly.
- Water damage behind crowns on landmark buildings. Landmark district rules often prohibit full crown replacement, so we patch, seal, and waterproof with a breathable membrane. That keeps the HeatShield coating below the crown dry through another freeze-thaw season. We do this work on buildings where the crown geometry hasn’t changed since the 1920s.
HeatShield Service in New York: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
New York City’s Local Law 56 of 2016 is the quiet rule that reshapes nearly every HeatShield job here. All newly installed or replaced chimney liners must be listed to UL 1777 or have DOB approval. Most neighboring cities follow NFPA 211 alone, which gives technicians wider latitude. New York does not. That means a HeatShield recoating job on a brownstone or co-op chimney usually requires our Chimney Inspection in New York, and in buildings with a board, board approval before any resurfacing begins. We coordinate that paperwork and explain it plainly to owners: the coating itself is fine, but the filing requirements around it are not optional. On a recent West End Avenue co-op job, a HeatShield Cerfractory coating from 2014 had spalled off the upper flue tiles after years of freeze-thaw exposure. The crown was cracked, water had pooled behind the coating, and the board needed a signed Level 2 report. We stripped the loose material, applied Joint Repair at the clay tile seams, recoated with Cerfractory, finished with a breathable waterproofing membrane on the crown, and the board-approved inspection passed the following week.
HeatShield Models & Products We Service in New York
We carry and service the full HeatShield product range: Cerfractory Flue Sealant for coating and recoat work, the Joint Repair System for clay tile seam rebuilds, CeCure Sleeve Relining for structural relines, and EcoPrep Surface Prep when the existing surface is too dirty or degraded for adhesion. We stock these products for New York turnaround, not shipped-in-when-needed. If a flue is too far gone for a HeatShield patch, we tell you directly and quote a full stainless steel or cast-in-place liner instead. Shared chimneys in pre-war co-ops often fall into that category, because spot repairs won’t satisfy a Level 2 inspection when the liner serves multiple fireplaces above and below yours.

AfterHeatShield Service Pricing in New York
A standard chimney sweep in New York runs $180 to $340, and HeatShield recoating or repair starts around $600 and climbs depending on flue height, access, and how much old coating must be stripped. Most of our New York HeatShield jobs land between $800 and $2,200, which includes camera inspection, surface prep, material, application, and the written report. Roof access in brownstones and high-rises affects the price more than any other factor. Every quote arrives in writing before we touch the flue, and it never changes unless we find something behind a wall that a camera could not see from the roofline. Call (607) 695-6218 for an exact figure on your building, or read the FAQs below for ballpark guidance.

FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in New York
Yes, after proper surface prep. A sealed chimney has not been drying and venting for years, so the clay tile is often damp, dusty, and coated with old mortar debris. We camera the flue first, clean it thoroughly with EcoPrep, and only then apply Cerfractory. Skipping prep is why so many reopened brownstone chimneys shed their first coating within a season or two. Call (607) 695-6218 for an inspection before you open the fireplace.
HeatShield coatings are not waterproofing membranes, so no, not by themselves. The crown above the coating is what fails first in humid, salt-heavy air. We pair a HeatShield recoat with a breathable masonry waterproofing product on the crown, which keeps water out while letting the masonry dry. That combination holds up well on Manhattan and Brooklyn chimneys within sight of the harbor.
Yes, with a caveat. HeatShield Cerfractory handles gas fireplace flue temperatures fine, but gas flues produce acidic condensate that eats thin, poorly applied patches quickly. What matters is coating thickness and complete coverage, plus a Level 2 inspection because the flue runs inside a multi-floor wall assembly. A cracked patch that leaks exhaust inside a wall is a carbon monoxide hazard, not just a nuisance. We treat those calls seriously and camera every gas flue before quoting. Call us for a free estimate.
Fifteen to twenty years is realistic, provided the crown and flashing were addressed at the same time. If the crown keeps letting water into the masonry, the coating will spall again in five to seven years. Brownstone chimneys take more weather than most New York flues, so we inspect the crown and brickwork as part of every recoat estimate. A recoat quoted without checking the crown is a red flag. Call (607) 695-6218 and we’ll camera the full system before any number gets written down.
Usually not, especially if the chimney is shared. New York co-op boards often require a Level 2 report and a contractor’s COI before any work begins, and many want the board’s architect or managing agent to review the scope. We provide the inspection report and all paperwork your board asks for, and we’ll work directly with your property manager. If the chimney only serves your unit, some boards allow smaller patch work without a full vote, but you’ll want it in writing either way.
